Settling Into Childcare: What to Expect in the First Weeks

The first drop-off is one of the hardest moments in early parenthood. Your child may cry. You will probably want to cry too. What helps most is knowing what to actually expect, and understanding that the unsettled period is normal, temporary, and something every good childcare centre is prepared for.

Why Does Settling Into Childcare Feel So Hard?

Separation anxiety is a completely healthy part of child development. It typically peaks between eight months and three years of age, which is precisely the window when most families start childcare. Your child is not being difficult. They are demonstrating a secure attachment to you, which is actually a sign that things at home are going well.

What families in Hillcrest and the surrounding northern Adelaide suburbs often find most reassuring is learning that their child usually settles within minutes of a parent leaving. Educators are trained to support children through this transition, and the environment at Treehouse is deliberately designed to help children feel curious rather than overwhelmed.

How Long Does the Settling-In Period Usually Take?

Every child is different. Some children walk in on day one and do not look back. Others take three to four weeks before they feel genuinely at home. Both are completely normal. There is no fixed timeline, and no milestone your child should be hitting by a particular date.

What we consistently see at Treehouse is that children settle more quickly when the routine is predictable and the goodbye is short. A long, hesitant farewell at the door can unintentionally signal to a child that there is something to be worried about. A calm, warm, and confident goodbye sends a different message entirely.

A short, warm goodbye and a consistent daily routine make the biggest difference.

What Does the Settling Process Look Like at Treehouse?

At Treehouse Early Learning Centre, settling is not left to chance. Your child's educator will take time to learn what your child finds comforting before their first day. That might be a particular activity, a comfort object from home, or the way they like to be greeted. We encourage families to share anything that helps their child feel settled, from a favourite toy to a phrase that signals safety.

You are also welcome to visit the centre before your child's first day, explore the rooms, and meet the educators who will be caring for your child. Familiar faces and familiar spaces reduce the unknown, and reducing the unknown is what settling is really about.

How Will You Know Your Child Is Okay After Drop-Off?

This is the question almost every parent asks. You drive away, you are worried, and you have no idea what is happening. At Treehouse, we use the Xplor Home app to share photos, short videos, and daily observations directly with families throughout the day. You do not need to wait until pick-up to know how your child is doing.

If your child is having a particularly difficult morning, an educator will reach out directly. Our open-door policy also means you are welcome to call and check in at any time. We would rather you feel reassured and return to work with peace of mind than spend the day anxious and distracted.

What If My Child Takes Longer to Settle Than Expected?

Some children need more time, and that is completely acceptable. If your child is still finding drop-offs difficult after a month, speak to your educator and to Centre Director Zarna Shah. There may be small adjustments, a slightly earlier arrival to beat the busy period, a different transition ritual, or a specific comfort strategy, that can make a meaningful difference.

The most important thing is that you feel heard and that your child's individual needs are taken seriously. A centre that treats every settling journey the same is not paying close enough attention. At Treehouse, your child's experience is the one that matters.

A note from Zarna Shah, Centre Director

In my 13 years at this centre, I have supported hundreds of families through the settling process. The families who find it easiest are not the ones whose children never cry. They are the ones who trust that we will care for their child the same way they would, and who feel confident enough to let us.

Settling into childcare is one of those things that feels impossible before it happens and surprisingly manageable once it does. The first day is the hardest. By the end of the first month, most children are walking through the door and heading straight to their favourite activity without a second glance.

That moment will come. And when it does, it feels exactly as good as you hoped it would.

If you are looking for childcare in Hillcrest, we would love to show you around. Tours are free, take about 30 minutes, and give your child a chance to explore the space before their first day.
